Event Description

Hashers: This is a substantial walk in the foothills of the Blue and John Crow mountains National Park and Forest Reserve.  We start at the Starlight chalet hotel, at Silver Hill.  Walk down to St Peters, with the Yallahs river in the valley below us.  Then take the forest trail which is above the Clyde river.  We reach to the ruins of the Clydesdale House (coffee plantation) and then back in a circle on the other side of the Clyde river valley to St Peters, and back up the hill to Silver Hill.

St Peters is he confluence of the Yallahs and Clyde rivers.

This walk is 10.2 kilometers, which is 6.33 miles.  It is a beautiful walk area at the western edge of the Blue Mountain range, with views looking up to St Helen’s Gap, Morces Gap, and the John Crow and Silver Hill peaks.

Hash Directions

This is relatively straightforward.  You are driving up to Holywell, passing the gates of Holywell park, and then down the other side to Section and Silver Hill.

See the Google link above.  The Starlight Chalet hotel is on Google.

From Papine take the only main road up to Holywell, passing through the Newcastle JDF camp.

It takes about 20 minutes from Papine to reach Cafe Blue, which is en-route up the hill to Holywell. From Cafe Blue to Holywell is about 11.5km and another 25 minutes.

From Holywell to Silver Hill is about a further 30 minutes, and some 6.5km.

NB.  When you reach Section (4km downhill from Holywell gates), you are a T junction road.  Turn RIGHT.  Silver Hill is a further 2km along the road.  This is a newly repaired and re-surfaced road.

Drive with care.  Roads are narrow in places.

Hash Extras

HASHERS. A relatively good level of walking fitness is required, but the terrain itself is not difficult. We walk downhill twice and we walk up hill twice!. The trail reaches an elevation of 3612 feet, but we only ascend some 2162 whilst on the trail. Clydesdale House (ruins) are wonderful to see, with the dilapidated wooden water wheel and abandoned buildings and gardens. You must bring water on the trail with you. It will take about 3 hours to walk with a good level of walking fitness.
