10:30 To 14:00

$500 JA

Event Description

A 6-7 km trail through forest, road and part of the old parochial Wallenford trail which runs by and above the Buff Bay river.  We start in the grounds of the Cedar Valley great house, (currently under renovation and restoration) hike up and through an old forest path to reach the main driving road.  Then a 3km walk along the rural road, with a gradual ascent all the way to Cascade, via Regale and the Cascade waterfall.  We then hike down through another old hillside pathway to meet the Wallenford trail and the Buff Bay river systems.  The footpath runs alongside and above the Buff Bay river, and return to the great house.

Please do note.  We start at 10.30am.  Apart from the 3km section on the Cascade/Regale section of road, (which is very quiet) the core of this trail is on old forest pathways and tracks.  It is quite steep(ish) in sections, both up and down and traverses the side of the hills, on narrow pathway , in sections.

It is a beautiful, forested walk, with fine views of the Buff Bay river valley, river tributaries, orange and grapefruit orchard, ruins and river falls.

Please be fit!

Pay attention now. We are going to meet in the grounds of the Cedar Valley great house, which is currently being restored.  The location is on the north side of Holywell, which is down past Section, Cascade and Regale.

The journey time will take at least 90 minutes.

  1. NB. For those who have never travelled past Holywell, please understand that this section of the road is quite narrow in places and requires care, not speed, and plenty use of your car horn.
  2. Travel first to Holywell. You all know how to get to Holywell.  From Papine, in Kingston, you drive north on the main driving road which takes you up and through the Newcastle JDF camp, and on to Holywell.  It is about 30 minutes to reach Café Blue, and another 22/25 minutes to the Holywell gates.
  3. The landslip section just before Holywell has been levelled and a large stone/mud barrier is now there. Easily passable now without fear!

Continue past the entrance gates at Holywell, and go 13km all the way downhill to Cedar Valley!

ii) From Holywell you reach Section about 4km downhill. Take your time.

Section, is a small community of about 4 buildings.  One building is directly in front of you, as you emerge from the forest road.  You turn LEFT, and go up an immediate steep hill.  It is only about 300 metres long.  Once at top you descend steeply down other side.  (This is a single lane roadway, which bypasses a landslip for the past 14 years.)

  1. Use your car horn when going up/down this section.

From Section to the Cedar Valley turn off is 9km.

Once over the bypass, (which has been recently resurfaced and free of pot holes) you stay on the only main driving road there is!  You’ll pass through the community of Cascade, you’ll pass the Cascade waterfall on your left, and you’ll pass through Regale.

After about 7.5km (from Section) you’ll see and pass the only café building, which runs the cycle stop for tourists.

A further 1.3km after this Cycle/restaurant stop, you will reach the bottom of the hill.  There is a telegraph pole right in front of you!  Turn sharp RIGHT, off the main road, which hairpins back off the main road.  There will be a JAH3 sign on the pole.

The road is very newly re-laid, you can’t miss it.  Take the road and just follow it all the way, until it becomes a marl track.

You are reaching the grounds of the Cedar Valley great house.  Keep going until you reach the large grass lawn area.

Please PARK at the bottom end of the grounds.

Journey time:  A good hour and half.  It’s 13km from Holywell gates, but a slow road.

Hash Extras

We do not cross any rivers. Some may wish to swim in a river pool (it's cold) which is near the house. Wear long trousers. Bring insect repellent. It is between 6 and 7km. Not far, relatively easy, but some steepish uphill, and narrow pathways sections on downhill.
